Literature lovers gathered in Ondara on Friday June 19 as Valencian author and essayist Carles Fenollosa presented his acclaimed novel Guerra, victòria, demà (War, Victory, Tomorrow), a work that has quickly become one of the most talked-about books in regional literature. The event formed part of the cultural programme organised by the Associació Cultural Ocell, which is marking its 50th anniversary throughout 2026.

Held at the association’s headquarters, the presentation offered readers the chance to hear directly from the author about the inspiration behind the novel, its historical influences and the research that shaped its pages. The discussion was introduced by educator and cultural figure Herme Maria, who guided the conversation and explored the themes running through the award-winning work.

A novel praised by critics and readers

Fenollosa’s novel recently received the 2026 Critics’ Prize from the Valencian Writers Association in the narrative category, cementing its reputation as one of the region’s standout literary achievements. The book has also attracted wider recognition beyond the Valencian Community and was shortlisted for other major literary honours.

At the heart of the story is Jesús Martorell, a fictional character whose life unfolds against the backdrop of some of the most turbulent decades of the twentieth century. Through his experiences, the novel explores memory, identity, loss and survival, while reflecting on the lasting impact of war, exile and social change on both individuals and the city of Valencia itself.

Fenollosa, born in Valencia in 1989, is known not only as a novelist but also as a respected researcher and academic. Alongside his fiction, he has written several acclaimed works on Valencian history, language and literature, establishing himself as one of the leading voices of a new generation of Valencian writers.

More literary events to come

The presentation is one of several high-profile literary events planned by the Associació Cultural Ocell during its anniversary year. The programme will continue in July with presentations by poet Joan Mestre and novelist Elvira Cambrils, ensuring that Ondara remains an important meeting point for readers, writers and cultural enthusiasts across the Marina Alta.
