Emergency teams rushed to the idyllic pueblo blanco of Frigiliana in the Axarquia area of Malaga Province on Monday evening after a car struck multiple people at an outdoor seating area.

Multiple casualties reported in historic street incident

Witnesses contacted emergency services around 7.30pm to describe the chaotic scene in Calle San Sebastian. A white Peugeot driven by a 47-year-old local woman mounted the pavement and ploughed straight into the terrace of Restaurante Virtudes in the heart of Frigiliana.

Two children numbered among those struck during the incident. Medical responders treated seven victims in total: youngsters aged five and 14, women aged 45, 48 and 79, plus men aged 44 and 77. Most were taken by ambulance to Hospital de la Axarquia in Velez-Malaga. Doctors sent the 14-year-old boy to a primary care facility in Nerja for assessment.

Driver health issue suspected as cause

Initial reports indicate the woman motorist experienced an epileptic seizure behind the wheel. This medical event apparently caused her to lose control of the car on the steep, hilly, winding road while driving the narrow historic streets.

Local police and Guardia Civil launched a full inquiry into the precise circumstances. Officers continue to examine the driver’s condition at the time and review any contributing factors. Fortunately none of the injured sustained life-threatening harm, though several required hospital checks.

Community reaction in peak tourist season

Frigiliana residents expressed shock over the accident, which took place during a busy period for visitors to this picturesque whitewashed village. Many locals and holidaymakers frequent the bars and restaurants lining the steep, cobbled lanes each summer.

Local resident, Vivienne Rice said, “apparently 4 people are injured including 2 children. It was a woman driving. I just hope all are ok. It was so scary to see.” Gillian Wilmot commented, “This was an accident waiting to happen. Is it necessary for cars to go through the village at night? Maybe it is time close that section from 6pm. So relieved no one was seriously injured.”

Authorities confirmed firefighters attended but ultimately played no active role once the vehicle was stopped and was of no further threat. Paramedic crews from Andalusia’s 112 emergency service coordinated the rapid response and casualty transfers.

Visitors to the area should stay alert in such environments while officials work to prevent similar occurrences through ongoing investigations.
