The Hefame Foundation, a non-profit organisation founded in Murcia, has officially launched a new collaboration with the Juan Ciudad non-profit organisation in order to help care for pregnant women, new mothers, and their newborn babies in Monrovia, Liberia. Specifically, the project will focus on two hospitals in the African city: St. Joseph Catholic Hospital and New Kru Town Clinic.

Tackling maternal mortality in Liberia

This initiative will help to save lives by making childbirth and neonatal care safer, amid a context of lacking resources and significant healthcare challenges. According to data from international organisations, in Liberia, the rate of maternal mortality is around 600 deaths per 100,000 live births.

Intensive training for healthcare professionals

The Hefame Foundation will continue and expand a training programme that has already been put into place in Monrovia, which will more thoroughly prepare healthcare professionals in the field of neonatal care. The course includes ten days of intensive training for the neonatal nurses, midwives, nursing assistants, and doctors.

This programme will also include a follow-up to check how the new knowledge is being applied in these hospital centres, as well as simulation sessions to continue honing the nurses’ and doctors’ skills and prepare them for real medical complications and situations.

Expanding health and wellness projects worldwide

The Hefame Foundation, created in 1998, is an organisation committed to projects centred on health sciences, including medicines. During its operation, the foundation has worked on countless charity projects, including solidarity hand creams, and wines from which a portion of the proceeds go to humanitarian projects; a paediatric gymnasium designed to help children with health conditions regain strength, to be introduced in Murcia; and other services related to health and wellness in the Region of Murcia.

With a commitment to helping new mothers and babies, this is only one of the ways the non-profit organisations of Murcia are stepping in to make the world a safer place.
