One of Mallorca’s most beautiful summer traditions is set to return as the Mare de Déu del Carme festivities take over Port de Pollença, bringing nearly two weeks of celebrations to the waterfront, before culminating with the patron saint’s feast day on July 16. The festival honours the Virgin of Carmen, revered as the protector of fishermen and all those who make their living at sea.

Blending religious devotion with music, entertainment and family-friendly events, the annual celebrations attract both locals and visitors eager to experience one of Mallorca’s most authentic coastal fiestas.

A packed programme for all ages

Throughout the festivities, the port comes alive with concerts, open-air dances, children’s entertainment, sporting events and cultural performances. Evenings are particularly lively, with Plaça Miquel Capllonch becoming the social heart of the celebrations as residents and holidaymakers gather to enjoy live music under the summer sky.

Traditional Mallorcan folk dancing, community meals, markets and performances all feature in the programme, creating a festival atmosphere that extends well beyond the harbour itself.

The unforgettable maritime procession

The emotional highlight arrives on July 16, when the image of the Virgin of Carmen is carried from the parish church to the harbour before being placed aboard a decorated fishing boat.

Hundreds of vessels, adorned with flowers and colourful flags, accompany the procession across the Bay of Pollença as priests bless the fleet. Garlands are cast into the sea in remembrance of fishermen and sailors who have lost their lives, while prayers are offered for the safety of those still working on the water.

As dusk falls, the illuminated flotilla creates one of Mallorca’s most striking summer spectacles, with crowds lining the promenade to watch the procession return to shore.

Fireworks bring the celebrations to a close

The festivities traditionally conclude with a dramatic fireworks display over the bay, accompanied by music and celebrations that continue late into the evening. The combination of sparkling reflections across the water, decorated boats and a packed waterfront makes it one of the island’s most photographed summer events.

Although many visitors come for the spectacle, the festival remains deeply rooted in Port de Pollença’s fishing heritage and strong sense of community. It is a celebration that honours the town’s relationship with the sea while welcoming thousands of visitors to experience one of Mallorca’s most cherished traditions.

Whether you’re interested in local culture, religious traditions or simply looking for an unforgettable summer evening by the Mediterranean, the Mare de Déu del Carme festivities remain one of the standout events in Mallorca’s July calendar.
