The Balearic Islands are preparing for another exceptionally busy summer after holiday bookings rose by 10.3 per cent compared with the same period last year, underlining the archipelago’s enduring appeal with both international and domestic travellers.

Fresh booking data places the Balearics among Spain’s most sought-after holiday destinations ahead of the peak season, with the islands accounting for 15.5 per cent of all reservations made over the past week. Spain as a whole is expected to welcome around 43 million international visitors between June and September, generating an estimated €64 billion in tourism spending during the four-month period.

Strong demand for island holidays

The latest figures from travel technology platform Travelgate show demand for the Balearics continues to strengthen as the summer holiday season gets underway. Bookings have also climbed by almost 19 per cent over the past week alone, suggesting many travellers are finalising their holidays as schools break up across Europe.

The islands remain Spain’s third most popular destination for bookings, behind Catalonia and Andalusia, reflecting their continued popularity among visitors looking for beach holidays, family escapes and Mediterranean sunshine.

Most travellers are booking their trips between one and two months before departure, although last-minute holidays continue to account for almost one in ten reservations.

British visitors remain a driving force

While Spanish residents make up the largest share of bookings at 48.6 per cent, the United Kingdom remains the Balearics’ biggest international market.

British holidaymakers account for 21.6 per cent of all bookings, comfortably ahead of Germany, which represents 4.5 per cent. The figures reinforce the importance of the UK market for the islands’ tourism industry, with British visitors continuing to fill hotels, apartments and holiday rentals throughout the summer months.

Couples account for more than half of all bookings, while breaks lasting between two and five nights remain the most common length of stay.

Another record season in sight

The positive outlook for the Balearics comes as Spain continues to post record tourism figures.

Between January and May, the country welcomed 36.8 million international visitors, 3.2 per cent more than during the same period last year. Tourist spending reached more than €50.2 billion, an increase of 7.8 per cent. Tourism Minister Jordi Hereu has said Spain could surpass 100 million international visitors during 2026 if current trends continue.

For the Balearic Islands, the latest booking figures suggest another thriving summer lies ahead, with strong demand from both British and domestic travellers helping to cement the archipelago’s position as one of Europe’s most popular holiday destinations.
