Great news for those living in or visiting the area, as getting from one side of Benidorm to the other could soon become much simpler. Work has started on a major upgrade to the town’s TRAM route that will bring lasting improvements to daily travel.

What is due to change on the TRAM service

Ferrocarrils de la Generalitat Valenciana (FGV), under the Generalitat Valenciana, has begun a €5.6 million project to improve the section of TRAM Line 1 between Benidorm Station and Benidorm Intermodal. Regional Minister for Environment, Infrastructure and Territory Vicente Martinez Mus visited the site as construction got underway, joined by Benidorm Mayor Toni Perez and FGV Managing Director Alfonso Novo.

Construction is expected to take around eight months as part of the Alicante-Benidorm TRAM route modernisation.

Plans include, two new pedestrian crossings, A new signal-controlled road crossing linking Calle Finlandia with Avenida Beniarda, removal of the existing level crossing on Avenida de Andalucia, A new signal-controlled crossing close to Benidorm Intermodal, primarily for emergency vehicles and public transport, A restricted-access road over the Barranco de l’Aiguera to improve access for buses and emergency services and new fencing, upgraded pavements and landscaping around the railway area.

What it means if you live in the areas affected

For decades, the railway corridor has forced pedestrians and drivers to take longer routes between parts of Benidorm. Once complete, the new crossings are expected to make everyday journeys shorter with improved safety across the line. Emergency services and buses will also benefit from faster access using the new priority route, with upgraded traffic lights and signalling making crossing the railway safer for everyone.

Residents can expect construction activity over the next eight months, although public transport services are not expected to be disrupted and TRAM services will continue operating throughout the construction period.
