Stars of snooker and rugby and musicians gathered at Miraflores Golf in Mijas on Sunday to honour the memory of the late and well-loved John Virgo through a charity golf tournament. A full day of golf began with a 9.30am shotgun tee-off and raised plenty of funds for the Lions Club and all their charitable exploits. Some 117 tickets had been sold for the event, although the previous night’s England, Norway match might have had something to do with the numbers dropping to 90 in the morning. John Virgo had become an adopted Mijeño and played regularly at both Miraflores Golf Club and Mijas Golf, as well as supporting local charity events on the Costa del Sol.

Apt challenge at the 19th hole

Golfers faced a unique test at the 19th hole in true tribute to John. Participants potted coloured golf balls, symbolising snooker balls, through a croquet hoop to score points. This activity added a fun element connected to Virgo’s snooker background.

Star guests make journey to Costa del Sol

Long-time friends of John Virgo flew to the Costa del Sol specifically to pay tribute. Three-time world snooker champion Steve Davis attended the tournament. Snooker player Ken Doherty joined the occasion. Former Ireland international Keith O’Neill, Boyzone member Keith Duffy, ex-rugby player Mal O’Kelly and former Wales international Paul Jones made up the guest list.

Family members attend in force

John Virgo’s wife attended the event with their son, daughter and grandchildren. Family presence added a personal dimension to the tribute for a man who had made Mijas his second home.

Early fundraising success for Lions Club

Estimates placed fundraising efforts for the Lions Club at around €10,000 before raffles and the auction even began. Final counts remain pending as organisers tally all contributions from the day.

Hugely generous prizes

Donations came from all around the area’s businesses, including El Oceano and Christy’s. Raffle prizes included dinners for two at Scala Group restaurants. Dining vouchers at el Olivo in la Cala and Talk of the Town featured in the lots. Private performances by Ricky Lavazza, Laura Elen or Nicky Kate offered further incentives. A Persian charm necklace authenticated and valued at €800 by Anthony in Fuengirola counted among the generous contributions.

New Tricks provide rocking entertainment

New Tricks entertained by belting out some trusted classics of rock and pop. Singer Pete Carter earned commendation from Keith Duffy of Boyzone for the set.

Outstanding service from Spikes team

Ludo at Spikes and the team provided exceptional service as always. A massive barbecue kept everyone content despite the intense July heat.
