A 29-year-old woman and her two young children have died after a tragic incident at the Roncal dam in northern Spain, prompting three days of official mourning in the Navarre village where the family lived.

The incident happened at around 4.39pm on Wednesday July 15 at the Roncal dam on the River Esca, a well-known freshwater swimming area in the Pyrenees that attracts residents and visitors during the summer months. Emergency services rushed to the scene after the alarm was raised, deploying a medical helicopter, ambulances, firefighters and specialist medical teams. Despite prolonged attempts to resuscitate the three victims, they were pronounced dead at the scene.

The victims have been identified as a 29-year-old mother and her children, aged 11 and three. Authorities have not released their names.

Investigation underway

Spain’s Guardia Civil has opened an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the deaths. Initial findings suggest the family may have drowned, although investigators have stressed that the exact sequence of events will only be confirmed once enquiries are complete.

The case has been placed under judicial investigation as officers continue gathering evidence and speaking to witnesses. The children’s father was located shortly after the tragedy and travelled to the scene, while psychological support was also offered to emergency personnel involved in the rescue operation.

Community in shock

The family were residents of the Roncal Valley, and news of their deaths has left the local community devastated.

Roncal Town Council declared three days of official mourning, with municipal flags lowered to half-mast and all official events cancelled during the mourning period.

In a statement, the council expressed its “deep sorrow” over the loss of three members of the same family and offered its support to relatives and friends affected by the tragedy.

The Roncal dam is a popular recreation area featuring grassy banks, shaded picnic areas and designated bathing zones, particularly busy during the summer. While the site is widely used for swimming, authorities are now working to establish exactly what led to Wednesday’s fatal incident.
