Mojácar opens 100-plus free spaces at former campsite

Finding a space near Mojácar Playa should now be a little easier. More than 100 free places have opened at the former Camping El Cantal, giving summer drivers another option in one of the resort’s busiest areas.

The deal allows the privately owned land at El Cantal to be used as a public overflow car park after Mojácar Council reached an agreement with the site’s owner. Parking is free and available to residents and visitors, according to the council. The car park has been open since Wednesday July 15. Its arrival in the middle of the summer season gives drivers an alternative at a time when the coastal area is handling some of its heaviest traffic of the year.

Less time circling for a space

El Cantal is one of the busier parts of Mojácar Playa, where traffic rises sharply during the summer as residents, day visitors and holidaymakers head for the beach and nearby businesses. The council said the extra capacity is intended to improve traffic flow and reduce the time motorists spend looking for somewhere to leave their car. Turning the old camping ground into overflow parking should take some of the pressure off surrounding streets.

The location also places motorists close to local restaurants, shops and other services. That means the arrangement could help businesses by making the area easier to reach during the weeks when demand is highest.

A practical use for familiar land

The car park has been created through a collaboration agreement rather than the council purchasing the site. The land remains privately owned, but has been made available for public parking. The council has not said how long the agreement will last or whether the car park is intended to remain beyond the summer. Its announcement also did not specify opening hours, height restrictions, security arrangements or whether overnight parking is permitted.

Drivers should therefore check signs at the entrance for any on-site conditions. What is confirmed is that the site is already operating, parking is free, and more than 100 spaces are available in El Cantal.
