Spain weekend weather: Cooler nights, possible showers and still-warm south

Spain is ready for a welcome change over the next few days as cooler air drifts in from the northwest. After a stretch of fierce heat, many places will feel more comfortable, especially at night, though the south and east keep some of that summer warmth.

Friday still carries heat warnings in the south and east

Temperatures ease across the centre and west this Friday. Madrid looks set for around 33ºC, Zamora closer to 30ºC and Segovia about 32ºC. Further south and east, the mercury stays higher. Malaga, Almeria, Murcia, parts of the Ebro Valley, inland Valencia and Albacete can still reach nearly 40°C.

Eleven regions remain under heat alerts. Andalucia carries a red warning. Orange covers Aragon, the Balearic Islands, Catalonia, Castilla-La Mancha, Murcia, Navarra and La Rioja. Yellow warnings stay in place for Castilla y Leon, the Basque Country and the Valencian Community.

A few showers may pop up in the far northwest, mainly Galicia. Yellow storm alerts cover Aragon, Asturias, the Valencian Community and Galicia, with extra rain warnings for Asturias and Galicia. Moderate winds are expected in the Strait of Gibraltar and along the Alboran coast, picking up later over central-eastern areas. Morning mist is possible in Galicia and Asturias, while some dusty haze lingers over the southeast, Balearic Islands and eastern Canaries.

Saturday brings cloud and rain chances up north

A clearer change arrives on Saturday. Cloudier skies and scattered rain storms look likely across the northern half of the country, especially along the Cantabrian coast and in the Pyrenees. Most other areas stay largely bright. The Balearic Islands see some medium and high cloud, while the Canaries keep cloudy northern slopes and clearer southern ones.

Temperatures drop in most places. Only the Valencian Community coast, Almeria, Murcia and the Balearic Islands are likely to push past 35°C. Just two regions—the Balearic Islands and the Valencian Community— keep yellow heat alerts.

Sunday mornings feel noticeably cooler inland

Overnight temperatures fall sharply in many inland spots. Places such as Avila, Burgos, Cuenca, Leon, Palencia, Salamanca, Segovia and Soria could see lows of 10°C or 12°C. Mediterranean coasts keep warmer nights, with minima still around 25 °C in Alicante, Almeria, Malaga and Murcia.

Daytime readings stay high in Malaga and Sevilla near 37°C. Murcia may still climb close to 40°C. Northern cities like A Coruna, San Sebastian, Oviedo, Santander and Vitoria stay much milder, with afternoon values between 22°C and 25°C.

What this weather means for weekend plans

Inland areas offer the best chance of cooler nights and more comfortable sleeping. Northern regions should pack an umbrella for possible showers on Saturday. Southern and eastern coasts remain warm enough for beach days, though residual heat warnings mean taking the usual care with sun and hydration. There is also the chance of sudden wind storms as the temperature drops.

Aemet, the official Spanish meteorological centre, expects the cooler spell to ease after the weekend, with warmer conditions returning under largely sunny skies next week. For now, the next three days give many parts of Spain a useful break from the recent intense heat.
