Velez-Malaga Town Hall hosted the official presentation on Tuesday, July 28 of the future Hospital HM Velez-Malaga. This private project will mobilise investment above €40 million, generate more than 250 jobs and expand healthcare provision across the Axarquia. Construction starts this coming September under a 20-month programme, with opening planned for spring 2028.

Project site, build details and all there will be

A 55,000-square-metre plot on Camino de Torrox will accommodate the hospital. Initial construction covers nearly 10,000 square metres, leaving room for later expansion. Construction company Ferrovial holds responsibility for the works, which already hold the required building licence granted after detailed council technical review.

Facilities planned for new hospital

Around 50 complete inpatient rooms, some 50 consulting rooms, six operating theatres, a medical-surgical day hospital, an adult intensive care unit and adult plus paediatric accident and emergency services form the core. A broad range of medical specialties will also operate from the site.

Designers plan to strengthen care for a district whose resident population exceeds 200,000 and rises sharply in the tourist season, cutting the need for many journeys to Malaga city.

Statements from local and hospital heads

Mayor Jesus Lupianez called the arrival “excellent news for the present and future of our town and the entire district.” He stressed that the private centre complements rather than replaces public services, giving residents extra local options. Council urban-planning staff received particular praise for securing the works licence so quickly.

HM Hospitales chief executive Alejandro Abarca confirmed the facility will function as a university hospital. He described the scheme as bringing high-complexity medicine, advanced technology and person-focused care directly to the Axarquia.

Scale model now on public view

A detailed scale model of the finished hospital went on display during the presentation. Residents and visitors can examine the design in the Town Hall courtyard over the coming days.
