New exhibition celebrating painter Tomás Raja arrives at Puerto de Mazarron library

The Puerto de Mazarron Library is hosting a new travelling exhibition, Tomás y la lata de sardinas, or Tomás and the Sardine Can, a new artistic venture celebrating the life and artistic journey of local painter Tomás Raja. The exhibition, which officially debuted in the library on July 30 and will be available until October 2, finally returns to the coastal roots that inspired its creation after a successful tour across the Region of Murcia.

A coastal return for a local artistic legend

The exhibition, which has featured in venues including the Regional Library of Murcia and the Alcantarilla Library, originates from a storybook based on personal written pieces from Tomás Raja and his family. It tells the story of a miner’s son who overcame obstacles to follow his calling and become a renowned painter, going on to win prestigious accolades including the first prize at the Villa de Fuente Álamo Painting Competition.

Inspiring art, film, and family history

Visitors to the venue will experience a blend of different artistic mediums, all in the same exhibition. The display will feature 30 original illustrations created by artist Isabel Guillermo specifically for the touring project, all of which are available for purchase to directly benefit the painter’s family. Alongside the artwork, the exhibition includes a large-format projection of a short film written and directed by Luis Marino, as well as showcase cabinets filled with the physical storybook written by Blas Miras and personal relics donated by the artist’s family.

Preserving regional identity across generations

This showcase, which is certain to enchant audiences across Puerto de Mazarron and beyond, highlights traditional values, everyday life, and the area’s deep connections to both the sea and the mining industry. It also upholds the cultural identity of the Grupo Almagra de Mazarron, an initiative dedicated to preserving the municipality’s historical and emotional heritage as a source of artistic inspiration. 

After its stay in Puerto de Mazarron, the exhibition will then move on to the San Javier Library in October before heading to Fuente Alamo, giving even more people the chance to experience this unique and fascinating artistic venture.
