New camera system targets rogue parking

Council bosses in Fuengirola have rolled out a network of video cameras that directly link to Local Police, designed to catch drivers who park or stop illegally at bus stops across the town. The device identifies unauthorised vehicles rather than people, via their number plates, and communicates this information to officers in real time, allowing them to issue fines for improper parking almost instantly.

Mobility councillor Isabel Gonzalez has admitted the move was far from the authority’s first choice. She stressed that using such a system was not ideal and that fining offenders had always been treated as a last resort. Growing pressure from bus users and drivers, however, forced the council’s hand.

Elderly and disabled passengers most vulnerable at bus stops

Cars parked at bus stops do more than cause a minor inconvenience. Complaints from passengers and drivers have been an ongoing issue as vehicles stopping briefly at stops prevent buses from pulling in close enough to the kerb for people, particularly older residents with reduced mobility, to board or alight safely. Officials say obstructed stops also delay routes and contribute to gridlock across the town.

Social media users have echoed those frustrations, with one commenter describing how getting on or off buses along Avenida Jesus Cautivo can become genuinely dangerous, since parked cars often block the pavement and force passengers to step into traffic to reach safety. Another poster raised a separate gripe, saying buses themselves sometimes fail to pull fully into designated bays, encroaching on neighbouring lanes instead.

160 fines issued last year alone

Figures from 2025 highlight how big the problem has become.  Last year local police recorded a total of 160 penalties against drivers who parked without authorisation at bus stops across the area, a figure officials hope the new camera system will sharply reduce.
