Explosive device on drone sparks major German airport investigation

A major security operation was launched at one of Germany’s busiest cargo airports on Wednesday August 5 after a drone carrying an explosive device was discovered within the restricted airfield, prompting temporary runway closures and a large-scale police investigation.

The drone was found during the early hours of Wednesday at Leipzig/Halle Airport by an airport employee, who immediately alerted emergency services. Bomb disposal experts were called to the scene and used specialist equipment to examine the device before safely removing its detonator.

Airport operations were briefly disrupted while the area was secured. Cargo aircraft damaged after aborted landing

The incident took another unexpected turn when a DHL cargo aircraft, which had abandoned its approach because of the runway closure, later struck an unidentified object while climbing away from the airport.

The aircraft landed safely in Hanover, where engineers discovered minor damage. Investigators are now examining whether the object could have been connected to the earlier security incident, although officials have stressed that no link has yet been established.

Leipzig/Halle Airport is one of Europe’s most important freight hubs, handling thousands of cargo flights every year and serving as a major logistics centre for international deliveries.
