Police stunned as person spotted riding on roof of moving car on busy road

A driver has been reported by police in Javea after being caught travelling along a public road with another person sitting on the roof of the moving car.

The extraordinary scene prompted intervention from the Policía Local de Javea, who warned that the stunt presented a serious danger not only to those inside and on top of the vehicle, but to everyone else using the road.

The person perched on the roof had no protection or restraint, meaning a sudden brake, sharp turn or unexpected incident could potentially have sent them falling into the road.

Police have since taken action against the driver over the incident.

According to information released by the local police, officers detected the car while it was being driven on a road open to normal traffic in the municipality.

Instead of travelling inside the vehicle, one of the occupants was sitting outside, on top of the car.

There was nothing securing the person to the vehicle, leaving them dangerously exposed while the car was in motion.

Authorities described the behaviour as particularly hazardous given how quickly the situation could have turned into a serious accident.

Even an otherwise routine event on the road, such as braking unexpectedly or taking evasive action, could have put the person on the roof at immediate risk.

The Policía Local subsequently reported the driver, with the conduct described as a very serious traffic infringement.

A separate local report said the driver had been reported for an alleged offence of reckless driving.

Police have not disclosed the identities or ages of the people involved, nor has the precise road where the incident occurred been publicly specified in the initial reports.

There has also been no indication that anyone was injured.

Police issue road safety warning

While the bizarre sight may have appeared almost like a stunt, officers stressed the potentially devastating consequences of travelling in such a way.

Someone riding on the exterior of a moving vehicle has none of the protection normally provided to passengers, including a seat, seatbelt and the physical structure of the car itself.

Police also pointed out that the danger extends beyond the people directly involved. An unexpected fall or emergency manoeuvre could force surrounding motorists to react suddenly, potentially triggering a wider collision.

Following the incident, the Policía Local reiterated its call for motorists to behave responsibly and follow basic road safety rules.

Officers warned that reckless behaviour behind the wheel can create situations capable of ending in accidents with irreversible consequences.

The unusual case comes during the busy summer period on the Costa Blanca, when roads around popular destinations such as Javea see increased traffic from residents and visitors.

For police, however, the message from this particular incident is straightforward: the roof of a moving car is no place for a passenger.
