Coin’s giant tomato festival is back, and this year it has a mega pop star behind it

This small town is inviting everyone to its main square for live music, dancing and one extremely special tomato, and on of Spain’s biggest names in pop is lending their support.

Tomatoes take over Coin this week

Plaza de la Alameda in Coin will host the third edition of the Verbena Tomatera on August 13 and 14, starting at 8pm each evening. The two-day festival forms part of the town’s very important Feria de Agosto celebrations. Locals and visitors will gather to enjoy live bands, a DJ set and food stalls serving up plenty of the region’s famous prized produce.

Organised by the Asociacion Tomate Huevo Toro, this annual event honours the farmers behind the mega Tomate Huevo Toro, the large, air-cultivated tomato grown across the Valle del Guadalhorce.

Exciting live music line-up with a big pop star in the mix

Thursday August 13 belongs to Sotano Sur, with Friday August 14 welcomes Siempre Asi take to the stage. Both evenings will be accompanied by DJ Toni Solis, with a bar serving food and drinks throughout the entire event.

Adding extra glamour to this year’s programme, Spanish singer Melody has been announced as patron of the accompanying Concurso Cata Subasta, the tasting and auction contest that rounds off the festivities on August 15. With more than two decades in the music industry, the Seville-born artist has become one of Spanish pop’s most recognisable voices, and her involvement is expected to draw even bigger crowds to Coin’s Parque San Agustin for the final day.

Why this tomato brings such interest

Celebrations see the main event on August 15 with the Concurso Cata Subasta, a tasting contest that brings together growers from across the Valle del Guadalhorce. A specialist panel judges each entry on flavour, colour, aroma and texture, before crowning a winning batch. That crate is then auctioned off for charity, with bidding at last year’s event reaching an incredible €18,000, a figure organisers say reflects the growing reputation of this outdoor-grown variety among chefs and food lovers across the province.

2026’s edition also introduces a national poetry competition inspired by the tomato, tying literature and farming together for the first time. Anyone fancying a late-summer trip to the beautiful inland village of Coin could do a lot worse than timing it around this quirky, fun, community-spirited corner of Andalucian tradition.
