Marbella jeweller fights back with high-tech €400,000 security system after decades of raids

Jeweller Gómez & Molina has unveiled a new high-tech security system at its Marbella jewellery store after the family business has had to put up with decades of robberies, including one spectacular ram raid that saw thieves steal more than €1 million in jewellery.

New images circulating on social media have drawn attention to the latest security measures at the prestigious jeweller, with the business investing around €400,000 in protection against would-be thieves.

Miguel Gómez Molina, a second-generation member of the family behind Gómez & Molina Joyeros in Marbella, has described a remarkable new structure which looks like a stone wall but is actually made from a special aluminium alloy manufactured in Canada. The premises also feature reinforced glass fitted with movement, sound, inertia and thermal sensors linked to artificial intelligence.

Such technology is a long way from simply putting bars over a window, with the system designed to make life considerably harder for criminals targeting the Marbella jewellery trade.

Gómez & Molina has long history of robberies

Gómez & Molina’s investment comes with a remarkable history of attacks. Back in May 2002, four robbers drove a stolen van into one of the company’s Marbella shops and ripped out a 100-kilo armoured door.

The entire raid reportedly took just 30 seconds, with the gang escaping with jewellery worth more than €1 million. The thieves had driven the vehicle over a pavement, steps and the kerb before smashing through the entrance.

Previous attacks had already made security a major concern for the family. In August 2001, thieves broke two shop windows using building machetes and prevented a security guard from intervening while they grabbed watches and jewellery. Around 240 million pesetas worth of goods were taken, although most were later recovered.

Marbella still a top target for luxury thieves

Luxury jewellery and watches continue to attract organised criminals to Marbella and Puerto Banus, with police operations in recent years targeting gangs involved in high-value watch robberies.

For Gómez & Molina, the latest security technology represents a very modern response to a problem the family has been dealing with for generations.
