A recent poll asking whether hotels should face the same water restrictions as residents prompted a range of responses. Most comments supported equal restrictions, particularly where local people are being asked to make significant sacrifices.
For Penny Lee, the answer is yes, although she believes hotels should be given some flexibility to meet essential standards. “Yes! Ok they need a different allowance for the amount of water needed to meet hygiene and food standards but within those & reasonable use for the amount of guests and any water reuse systems that can be introduced to the whole system to counter balance the amount of fresh water use why not!” Her suggestion highlights the possibility of allowing essential hotel operations to continue while still limiting unnecessary consumption.
Jennifer Raudebaugh took a much firmer view, arguing that hotels should face the same restrictions as residents. “No swimming in pools or flushing toilets for residents? Then, absolutely… no swimming in pools or flushing toilets for users of hotels. Why would residents go without while watching vacationers use the water? That’s crazy. Basically, you are saying that companies and vacationers are more important than those who live here.”
The question of fairness also extended beyond hotels. Mike W-j asked, “Should golf courses be allowed to continue watering their greens?” He added, “It seems just the common peasants have to suffer drought.” The comments suggest that some people see the debate as part of a wider question about how water restrictions are applied, and whether commercial and recreational users are being treated differently from households.
Other respondents were more direct. Many, including Peter MacGregor and Glenda Hull simply said, “Yes.
Overall, the responses show a clear concern about fairness and equal treatment during water shortages. Most people said hotels should face the same restrictions as residents, although some recognised that essential hygiene and food standards may require a different allowance. The wider comments also suggest that people want restrictions to apply consistently across other major water users, not just households.
