Saturday night brought a huge sporting achievement, as the Spanish team created another moment of national pride. In Frankfurt, six rhythmic gymnasts delivered a performance that ended a 35-year wait for a world title and sent Spain to the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics.
Spain wins world rhythmic gymnastics gold
Spain became world champion in the group all-around at the 2026 World Rhythmic Gymnastics Championships in Frankfurt, Germany, on Saturday, August 15. The result was Spain’s second world title in the event, following its previous victory in 1991, they scored 57.450 points to finish ahead of Japan on 56.700 and Brazil on 55.500.
Victory also gave Spain one of three Olympic quota places available through the group all-around competition, putting the country among the nations qualified for the group event at Los Angeles 2028.
Six gymnasts behind the victory
Captain Ines Bergua led the Spanish group, joined by Salma Solaun, Andrea Corral, Lucia Muñoz, Andrea Fernandez and Marina Cortelles. Alejandra Quereda and Ana Maria Pelaz coach the team. Spain recorded the highest combined score across the two routines of the all-around final.

‘We’re living a dream’, Bergua said, adding the team’s main target had been earning the Olympic place, with the world title providing an additional reward. The result marked the culmination of a strong period for the Spanish group, which had already enjoyed major success at European level.
A long wait finally ends
Spain’s previous world group all-around gold came 35 years ago, when the group led by Emilia Boneva won in 1991. After that title, Spain collected five group all-around silver medals during the 1990s and four bronze medals in the event: at Stuttgart in 2015, Sofia in 2022, Valencia in 2023 and Rio de Janeiro in 2025.
Recent form had suggested that another breakthrough was possible. Spain won three gold medals at each of the 2025 and 2026 European Championships before travelling to Frankfurt.
Now the goal is the Olympics. The quota place is awarded to Spain’s National Olympic Committee, not automatically to each of the six gymnasts. Final selection for Los Angeles will be decided by the Spanish Olympic authorities nearer the Games.
Spain are world champions in Football and also Rhythmic Gymnastics, what will be next?
