A Spanish coastal town has been left reeling after two hooded gunmen opened fire on a family in the street, killing three people including a woman who was eight months pregnant and her 16-year-old son. The shooting happened at around 10:00pm on Sunday in the El Rocío neighbourhood of Isla Cristina, Huelva, where the attackers reportedly arrived on a motorcycle and opened fire before fleeing.

A third victim, a 62-year-old woman who was the pregnant woman’s mother, was also killed. Two other people were injured, one seriously.   The attack has shocked the community and triggered a major police operation as investigators work to identify those responsible. The Guardia Civil is leading the investigation, with the case now under judicial secrecy.

Gunmen arrived on a motorcycle

Witness accounts and information emerging from the investigation indicate that two hooded men travelled to the neighbourhood on a motorcycle before opening fire. The victims were in the area of Calle Valverde del Camino when the gunmen reportedly began shooting. The attack was over quickly, with the assailants escaping on the motorcycle.

The motorcycle was later found abandoned and set alight in a nearby pine area, in what investigators believe may have been an attempt to destroy evidence and make it more difficult for officers to trace the attackers.  Emergency services rushed to the scene, but three people had already suffered fatal injuries. A fourth person was seriously injured, while another was reported to have suffered less serious injuries.

Pregnant woman and teenage son among dead

The three victims were members of the same family. The woman was 39 years old and eight months pregnant. Her 16-year-old son was also killed, along with her 62-year-old mother.  The deaths have added a particularly devastating dimension to the shooting, with three generations of the same family caught up in the attack.

The unborn baby is not counted separately in the confirmed death toll of three. Police have continued working at the scene while investigators establish exactly what happened and why the family was targeted.

Investigation points to possible revenge attack

The Guardia Civil’s investigation is examining a possible connection with a 2024 shooting in Huelva city, although authorities have not publicly established the motive and the case remains under secrecy.  That earlier shooting took place in the El Torrejón neighbourhood in September 2024, leaving one person dead and two others injured. Investigators are examining whether the latest attack could be part of a continuing conflict between rival groups.

Reports indicate that the victims in Isla Cristina were relatives of a man linked to the earlier incident. This has led investigators to consider a possible settling of scores connected to drug-trafficking groups as one of the main lines of inquiry.  However, that remains an investigative hypothesis rather than a confirmed motive. No conclusion has yet been announced by the authorities.

Isla Cristina placed under heavy police presence

The violence has prompted an increased security presence in Isla Cristina as officers search for the people responsible and work to prevent further incidents. The locality is a well-known coastal destination in Huelva, close to the Portuguese border, making the nature of the attack particularly shocking for a community accustomed to a busy summer season.

Local reports describe a large deployment of Guardia Civil and Policía Local officers following the shooting. Investigators have also been examining the scene for evidence, including spent ammunition and other material that could help identify the attackers.  The mayor of Isla Cristina, Genaro Orta, has condemned the violence and expressed concern over the impact on residents. The authorities have also warned against circulating graphic images from the scene.

Gunmen remain the focus of investigation

The immediate priority for investigators is finding the two men who carried out the attack. Their use of disguises, the motorcycle and the subsequent burning of the vehicle indicate that considerable effort may have been made to avoid identification. Officers are now examining evidence from the scene and the surrounding area as they try to establish the attackers’ route before and after the shooting. The circumstances have left residents facing difficult questions about how such an attack could take place in their neighbourhood.

Three members of one family are dead, including a pregnant woman and her teenage son, while two other people have been injured. For Isla Cristina, what began as another summer evening on the Huelva coast ended with a deadly burst of gunfire and a community now waiting for answers. The Guardia Civil investigation remains ongoing, with the motive still to be formally established and the two attackers still being sought.
