Driving out of Hurchillo towards Bigastro should now be a little brighter and safer following a €22,000 upgrade to street lighting along the CV-923.

Orihuela Town Hall has improved lighting along approximately 400 metres of road after previous work in the area left the existing system unable to adequately cover the widened route.

Ten new nine-metre lighting columns have been installed, while existing lights have also been upgraded. Both the new and older points now use 80-watt LED lighting, providing better visibility for drivers, cyclists and pedestrians.

New lights follow road improvements

The improvements follow work carried out last year, which included the first section of the Hurchillo-Bigastro cycle lane and improvements to access around Hurchillo’s public school.

That project widened part of the road, meaning the original street lighting was no longer sufficient to properly illuminate the entire route.

The latest work has therefore been designed to adapt the lighting to the new layout and improve conditions for everyone using this section of the CV-923.

The addition of LED technology should provide clearer lighting along the road while improving visibility during the hours of darkness.

School parking area also improved

The Town Hall has also taken the opportunity to brighten up the parking area between the school and the road.

New floodlights have been installed there, improving a space regularly used by local residents outside school hours.

The council says this is particularly useful given the limited amount of parking available in the area, making the space an important facility for people living nearby as well as those visiting the school.

Better lighting should make the parking area easier to use after dark while complementing the improvements carried out along the neighbouring road.

Separate electrical supply installed

Infrastructure councillor Victor Valverde said residents had already expressed their satisfaction with the improvements.

As part of the €22,000 project, a new electrical line has also been installed from the nearby main control panel.

This allows the lighting in this section to operate separately, improving the overall system and giving greater control over the newly upgraded infrastructure.

The combination of new columns, upgraded LED lights and additional floodlights completes the latest improvements to the route following last year’s road and cycle lane work.

For motorists heading between Hurchillo and Bigastro, as well as cyclists and pedestrians using the area, the result should be a brighter and safer journey after dark.
