Brighter streets: 465 new solar street lights coming to nine Estepona roads

Estepona is planning for a major public lighting upgrade, with 465 new street lights planned for roads and public spaces outside the town centre at a total cost of over half a million euros.

Most of the work will involve 325 solar-powered street lights on nine roads, including Montesol, Sidney, Guadalobon, Monterroso, Camino de Los Molinos, Velerin, La Cala and the Biosaludable Jesus de Polanco area.

Lighting will also be installed on tracks around Avenida de las Palmeras, giving several less central parts of Estepona better illumination after dark. Another 140 lights will be installed on Calle Montejaque, Calle Lima and Avenida de La Resina, with this part of the project carrying a budget of €98 thousand.

Estepona parks switch to LED lighting

Public parks are also included in the bigger lighting plan. Around 350 old high-pressure sodium lamps have been replaced with LED units at six green spaces, including Parque de la Constitucion, Parque Huerta Nueva, Parque de los Derechos Humanos, Parque de los Niños, Parque del Seghers and Parque Carmen Thyssen.

More than 100 decorative lighting points have also been installed at Parque Carmen Thyssen, allowing the area to be used more easily during evening hours. That work has cost €187,000, with newer lighting expected to reduce electricity consumption and light pollution.

New lights planned along Estepona coastline

Another €196,000 has been set aside for 138 new lights along seven sections of the coastal route.

Those locations include Calle Isdabe, Calle Benamara, Guadalmansa, La Gaspara, Avenida Mexico, Bahia Dorada 3 and Playa de Bahia Dorada.

Solar and LED technology form a major part of the wider push towards lower-energy public lighting. Andalucia’s current regulations also place greater emphasis on energy efficiency and reducing light pollution.

For Estepona residents, the changes should mean better-lit roads, parks and coastal paths while reducing the energy needed to keep public areas illuminated.
