Villajoyosa prepares to host the explosive ninth stage of La Vuelta 2026

Villajoyosa is set to host the start of the ninth stage of the incredible 81st edition of the Vuelta a España cycling race, a thrilling sporting event that will reach the Sierra de Aitana mountain range on Sunday, August 30. The town is currently in the process of finalising all the details for the organisation of this event, which will unite thousands of people, including athletes, sporting fans, residents, and visitors.

A grueling and thrilling route from the beach to the mountains

This ninth stage promises to be the toughest and most explosive of the 2026 edition with six mountain passes. Stage 9 of the race is set to begin on the beach, from the idyllic promenade of the Playa Centro in Villajoyosa, and will cover 187 kilometres with 5,100 metres of elevation gain. From its starting point, it will travel through various streets and areas of the town, including Costera la Mar, Avenida País Valencià, Calle Barranquet, Avenida Benidorm, Calle Colón, the roundabout on Avenida del Puerto, and the road that crosses the Secanet area to connect with the CV-759 towards Finestrat.

During the event, residents and visitors will be able to watch the cycling athletes as they bullet through the town.

Key climbs and a historic summit finish

Finally, the climb to the mythical Alto de El Miserat, a first-category climb, and the Puerto de Tudons, a second-category climb, will be two of the key moments of the race. The sporting event will reach its most thrilling climax during the ascent to the Sierra de Aitana, one of the historic peaks of La Vuelta that, after a decade of absence, will return, marking the 25th anniversary of its debut in the competition.

A historic sporting milestone for the coastal town

This edition marks the first time that Villajoyosa is the host for this stage of the Vuelta a España cycling race.
