€4.45 million refurbishment transforms two Elche neighbourhood markets

Work is continuing on the major refurbishment of two neighbourhood markets in Elche, with more than €4.45 million being invested in the projects.

The Plaza Madrid and Plaza Barcelona markets, both serving the Carrus area, have been undergoing extensive renovation since work began in July. The projects are expected to take around ten months to complete.

Plaza Barcelona renovation moves on to new market stalls

At Plaza Barcelona, most of the demolition and stripping-out work has now been completed.

Old partitions between stalls, installations and interior finishes have been removed as the building is prepared for the next stages of its transformation.

Existing installations that could potentially be retained have also been tested and found to be in suitable condition.

Work is now focused on constructing the new stall platforms on the ground floor, beginning the planned reorganisation of the market’s trading area.

The refurbishment of Plaza Barcelona has a budget of €1.9 million and forms part of the wider investment in improving neighbourhood market facilities in Carrus.

Major structural changes planned at Plaza Madrid market

At Plaza Madrid, the building has also been cleared of its former stalls, partitions, installations and finishes.

Workers are currently assessing the building’s structure and completing the removal of the facade covering before moving on to one of the most significant parts of the redevelopment.

The next major stage will involve removing part of the upper floor in the centre of the building.

This will create a large opening connecting the market’s two levels and considerably change the internal layout of the building.

Structural reinforcement will then be carried out, together with foundations for a new lift and staircase to improve access between floors.

More than €4.45 million invested in Carrus market improvements

The Plaza Madrid refurbishment has a budget of €2.5 million, while €1.9 million is being spent on Plaza Barcelona.

Together, the two projects represent an investment of more than €4.45 million in the neighbourhood markets serving the Carrus area.

Both renovations began in July and are expected to take around ten months to complete, with work progressing through the demolition and structural stages before the new internal market areas take shape.

The projects will provide extensively renovated facilities for traders and shoppers, while the changes at Plaza Madrid will also improve movement between the building’s two floors through the addition of the new lift and staircase.
