Nerja prepares 18 Protección Civil volunteers for water rescue emergencies

Nerja has completed a specialist water rescue course that has brought together 18 Protección Civil volunteers from six Spanish provinces.

Volunteers from Valencia, Alicante, Castellon, Sevilla, Malaga and Huelva travelled to Nerja to take part in the training organised by the Asociación Nacional de Agrupaciones de Voluntarios de Protección Civil.

Practical training of this kind is particularly important for volunteers who may be called upon when someone gets into trouble in the sea or other aquatic environments.

Participants used the course to build their knowledge and develop skills for dealing with emergencies in the water, giving them greater confidence when faced with potentially difficult rescue situations.

Volunteers return home better prepared than ever

Experience gained during the course can prove vital when every second counts. Water emergencies can change rapidly, making preparation and the ability to react correctly an important part of any rescue operation.

Volunteers from different parts of Spain also had the chance to share their experiences during their time in Nerja. That exchange of knowledge gives individual Protección Civil groups the opportunity to learn from one another and strengthen their wider emergency response skills.
Six provinces were represented during the training, with all 18 volunteers now returning to their home areas with specialist knowledge that can be put into practice as part of their local service.

Nerja hosts national Protección Civil training

Nerja has previously hosted training for Protección Civil volunteers, reflecting the town’s role in supporting specialist emergency preparation.

Local Protección Civil volunteers provide support during emergencies and public events, with water safety particularly relevant to a coastal town that welcomes large numbers of residents and visitors.

Completion of the course in Nerja brings the latest training programme to a close, but the knowledge gained will continue to be used by volunteers in their respective communities. For the 18 participants, the course represents more than another qualification. It provides practical preparation for the moment when their skills may be needed to help someone in serious trouble in the water.
