Orihuela update: Hurchillo church square set for €60,000 accessibility and lighting upgrade

Hurchillo’s church square is set for a €60,000 upgrade, with plans to improve pavements, accessibility, lighting and the general condition of one of the village’s busiest areas.

Orihuela Town Hall has put the work out to tender with a budget of €59,966, including tax. Once the contract is awarded, the project is expected to take two months.

Wider pavements and accessible crossings planned around Hurchillo church square

Much of the work will concentrate on making it easier to get around the square, particularly for pedestrians and people with reduced mobility.

Pavements will be widened and improved, while pedestrian crossings will gain accessible ramps and tactile paving.

The surface in front of the church will also be replaced and a new section of pavement added to remove steps and other obstacles along the pedestrian route.

These changes are intended to create a more accessible route through an area that serves as an important meeting point for residents and visitors to Hurchillo.

The square itself will also receive a new layer of asphalt after several years without a major refurbishment.

New LED lighting will illuminate the church and surrounding public space

Public lighting is another part of the planned €59,966 project.

An existing lighting column in the centre of the square will be moved, while the current lights will be replaced with LED units.

A new spotlight will also be installed to illuminate the church facade, improving the appearance of the central area after dark.

The work will be carried out alongside the improvements to pavements, crossings and the road surface, with the overall project expected to take around two months once the contract has been awarded.

Other changes will focus on the organisation and general condition of the public space.

Recycling containers will be reorganised, with a dedicated area created alongside the CV-923. Drainage improvements and repairs to a damaged section of kerb are also planned as part of the work.

The project brings together a series of smaller improvements designed to refurbish the square and make it easier to use.

Hurchillo’s church square is a central meeting point in the village, with shops and other local activity concentrated around it.

The planned investment will therefore target both the appearance of the area and practical issues including pedestrian access, lighting, drainage and the organisation of recycling containers.
