Rowing event in Javea brings breast cancer survivors together

The coastal waters off Javea will transform into a hub of hope, sport, and inclusion this September as the town prepares to host the second “100 SUMA Solidarity Strokes against Breast Cancer” event.

Rowing together for breast cancer recovery and inclusion

Taking place on Sunday, September 20 and organised by the Rowing Federation of the Valencian Community in close collaboration with the Javea Yacht Club, the regatta will bring together rowers, survivors, and local supporters to raise awareness and promote solidarity for those battling breast cancer on the Costa Blanca and beyond.

Traditional boats take to local waters

The charitable event features two distinct competitive categories: the Valientes, or “Brave,” category, is composed entirely of breast cancer survivors, showcasing the powerful physical and psychological benefits of rowing in post-treatment recovery. Meanwhile, the Iguales, or “Equal,” category, features mixed crews of athletes where at least one breast cancer survivor competes alongside local rowers under non-competitive licenses.

Participants will take to the sea in traditional Falucho Valencià boats, a distinctive Levantine style of fixed-seat rowing deeply rooted in the region’s local cultural and maritime heritage. Crews will navigate short coastal courses ranging from 350 to 700 metres, and spectators will be offered clear views of the sporting action directly from the shoreline, the port area, and nearby beaches.

Free introductory sessions welcome beginners to the water

The event will also open with introductory, non-competitive rowing sessions, inviting residents, beginners, and curious passersby to take up oars alongside experienced instructors.

Driving breast cancer awareness across the region

Supported by local charities and municipal organisations, the sporting initiative highlights how nautical sports can break social barriers, foster community well-being, and drive essential awareness for ongoing cancer research across Alicante and in the whole of Spain.
