Tragic moment mourning family hit by devastating mountain rockfall

Grief wasn’t the only emotion of the day when on a mountain highway in Italy an unimaginable disaster struck a family already heading towards a day of heavy hearts.

Shocking impact along the mountain pass

Traversing regional road 521 between Morro Reatino and Leonessa, a funeral cortege was making its quiet journey toward Buda di Cascia. Dislodging without warning around 1.30pm on Saturday, September 12, a heavy stone block detached from an adjacent cliff face. Descending down the sheer slope, the falling debris crashed directly into a vehicle travelling behind the hearse carrying the mother’s coffin.

Victim Maria Antonietta D’Andrea, a 66-year-old clothing boutique owner from Ostia, suffered fatal injuries. Seated in the front passenger seat next to her husband, she bore the direct impact when the falling rock smashed through the car roof and cabin.

Scattering across the asphalt, loose rocks and flying fragments instantly struck secondary vehicles trailing in the procession. Seven remaining passengers sustained injuries during the sudden multi-car chain reaction.

Rapid response from local emergency teams

First responders rushed to the isolated location minutes after receiving emergency calls. Dispatchers deployed two ambulances, a specialised medical support vehicle, local fire crews, and Carabinieri officers from Labro and Contigliano. Paramedics quickly evaluated all victims at the scene while an air ambulance stayed on standby.

Four wounded individuals required immediate ambulance transport to the San Camillo De Lellis Hospital in Rieti. Attending doctors confirmed that none of the admitted patients faced critical or life-threatening conditions. Road authorities temporarily closed the mountain corridor while emergency personnel cleared debris and secured the slope.

Regional officials acknowledge that this narrow pass has historically experienced rockslides and soil movements. Containment nets and catch walls had previously been installed at critical sections along the route to protect passing motorist traffic.

An already horrendous day that held even more tragedy. Relatives later gathered to hold the scheduled funeral service for Maria’s mother.
