Gibraltar airport arrest after passenger caught with fake Dutch passport

Trying to board a flight to the UK with a false Dutch passport was never going to end well, but the way Gibraltar authorities uncovered the alleged deception is what makes this case unusual. A 27-year-old stateless man was stopped at Gibraltar International Airport after ground staff spotted irregularities with his UK travel authorisation, leading to the discovery of a passport carrying a completely different identity.

The man, identified by police as Y. A., was at the airport on Sunday, September 13, preparing to travel to the UK when airport ground assistance staff noticed anomalies in his UK Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA). Those concerns led to further checks, during which staff and police discovered a falsified Dutch passport issued in a false identity.

A second identity uncovered at Gibraltar Airport

The Royal Gibraltar Police (RGP) was called to deal with the situation after the irregularities were identified. Officers discovered that the Dutch passport did not match the man’s real identity. They also found that he was carrying his own valid identity document as a stateless person, issued by the Greek authorities.

The discovery meant that the passenger had a genuine document identifying him as a stateless person alongside the Dutch passport, which police say had been falsified and was issued in another identity. He had been intending to use the Dutch passport while travelling to the UK. The circumstances surrounding the false document, including how it came into the man’s possession, have not been released by police.

Passenger arrested and charged

Y. A. was arrested at Gibraltar International Airport and taken to New Mole House police station. He was questioned by officers before being formally charged with possession of a falsified or irregular passport. The man remained in police custody overnight and was due to appear before Gibraltar Magistrates’ Court today, September 14.

The charge concerns possession of the falsified travel document. Police have not suggested that the incident was connected to any security threat, and no further allegations have been made public. His case will now go before the Gibraltar courts, where the circumstances surrounding the passport and the identity it carried can be examined.

The ETA check that exposed the problem

The initial issue was not apparently an officer spotting the Dutch passport and immediately recognising it as false. Instead, the sequence began when ground assistance staff carrying out pre-boarding checks noticed something wrong with the man’s UK ETA. That prompted further investigation and ultimately brought the passport to the attention of the RGP.

According to the information released, the Dutch passport was found to have been falsified and issued in a false identity. The man’s genuine stateless-person identity document, issued by Greek authorities, was also found during the checks. The case is also notable because the passenger was not simply found travelling without the correct paperwork. Police say he was carrying a legitimate identity document while allegedly attempting to travel under an entirely different identity.

The discovery brought his journey to an immediate halt.

Instead of boarding his flight to the UK, the 27-year-old was taken to the police station, where he spent the night in custody and faced a court appearance the following day. Police have not yet provided further information about the intended destination in the UK, the identity shown on the Dutch passport or how the document was obtained. Those details could become clearer as the court proceedings continue.
