Benidorm bus tragedy leaves 63-year-old man dead after Rincón de Loix collision

A 63-year-old man has died after being struck by a private bus in one of Benidorm’s busiest tourist areas, with police investigating whether a blind spot played a role in the fatal collision.

The man, who was Spanish, was fatally injured on the morning of Thursday, September 10, after being hit by a private bus in Benidorm’s Rincón de Loix.

The collision happened close to a pedestrian crossing at the junction of Avenida Ametlla del Mar and Calle Gerona, in the area widely known as Benidorm’s ‘English zone’.

Emergency services were called to the scene following the incident, but despite their efforts, the 63-year-old could not be saved.

The busy location is a major route through the Rincón de Loix and is surrounded by hotels, businesses, restaurants and other tourist facilities.

Police investigate possible blind spot

Benidorm Local Police have opened an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash.

According to information from police sources reported by Cadena SER, one of the lines of investigation is whether a blind spot on the large vehicle prevented the driver from seeing the pedestrian and causing the tragic incident in Benidorm.

The precise circumstances leading up to the collision have not yet been established, and the investigation is continuing.

The bus driver was not arrested following the incident.

Police also carried out alcohol and drug tests on the driver, with both returning negative results.

The results form part of the initial investigation as officers work to establish exactly what happened in the moments before the pedestrian was struck.

Collision in a busy tourist district

The incident took place in the Rincón de Loix, one of Benidorm’s best-known and busiest neighbourhoods.

Avenida Ametlla del Mar runs through an area heavily used by both residents and visitors, particularly during the summer season.

The surrounding streets include a high concentration of hotels, restaurants, bars and tourist businesses, meaning pedestrian and vehicle traffic can be particularly heavy.

The nearby junction with Calle Gerona is also close to one of the main pedestrian areas serving the neighbourhood.

The fatal collision has highlighted the potential dangers faced by pedestrians and drivers in busy urban areas where large vehicles and people are sharing relatively confined road space.

Investigation remains ongoing

Police are continuing to examine the circumstances of the crash, including how the bus was positioned and what the driver could see immediately before the impact.
