Ronda’s famous gorge finally opens up its secret depths to visitors, and it’s beauty is well worth an explore

Walking beneath the Puente Nuevo, deep inside the gorge that has bought photographers to the landmark for centuries, is now opening up it’s beauty to visitors for the first time in the town’s history.

Officials unveiled the second phase of the Camino del Desfiladero on Tuesday, September 15, adding a 500-metre wooden walkway that runs along the Guadalevin river at the base of the gorge, close to the Old Town near Casa Manolillo. Combined with the 200-metre stretch opened in April 2024, the full route now covers an impressive 700 metres, carrying visitors from the foot of the Puente Nuevo through to the old San Miguel hermitage, near the Arab Baths.

Luis Machuca, the architect responsible for the stunning Caminito del Rey near Malaga, designed the new stretch. Builders kept the structure low, suspended just a few metres above the riverbed, to minimise its visual impact and preserve the character of the ravine.

“We’re going to have a completely new way of admiring this jewel,” Moreno told those gathered, describing the sensation of viewing Ronda’s famous cliffs from their base rather than only from the balconies above. He called the experience one of “serenity, peace, wonder and relaxation” despite sitting right in the heart of a busy town.

Why Ronda is betting big on tourism below ground

Investment across both phases reportedly exceeds €1.5 million, with the Malaga council contributing €675,000 towards construction. Fernandez noted that the original 200-metre section has already drawn more than 390,000 visits since 2024, averaging around 160,000 people a year.

Officials hope the extended route will spread footfall beyond the historic centre and into neighbourhoods such as Padre Jesus. General admission costs €12, with tickets bookable through desfiladerodeltajo.info.
