Magaluf plot twist as party resort welcomes major literary festival

Magaluf is preparing to swap its traditional party reputation for pages, podcasts and live performances as the Festival de Literatura Expandida de Magaluf (FLEM) returns for its sixth edition this October.

Taking place from October 1 to 4, 2026, the festival will bring more than 30 writers, artists, musicians and cultural figures to the island for four days of talks, readings, concerts and creative events.

The festival will be held at the INNSiDE Wave Calvià, its new seafront home, just a short distance from its previous location. More than 10,000 people attended last year’s edition, according to organisers.

A very different side of Magaluf

FLEM is designed to go beyond traditional literary festivals, mixing books and writing with music, art, podcasts and live performances.

The concept has helped the event establish itself as one of Mallorca’s more innovative cultural gatherings, with the organisers deliberately using Magaluf as part of the experience rather than simply a backdrop.

Visitors can expect conversations with authors, live podcast recordings, poetry and literary performances alongside concerts and other cultural activities.

The Spanish Ministry of Education, Vocational Training and Sports describes FLEM as an event that expands literature beyond the book, bringing together writing, music, visual arts and performance.

Big names heading to Mallorca

The 2026 programme features an international line-up, with Anna Todd among the headline names.

The American author became a global publishing phenomenon with her After series and will make a particularly relevant appearance in Mallorca after the release of her latest novel, The Last Sunrise, which is set on the island.

Other names on the programme include French novelist David Foenkinos, renowned Spanish author Elísabet Benavent, crime writer Alicia Giménez Bartlett, palaeoanthropologist Juan Luis Arsuaga, journalist and author Manuel Jabois, musician and writer Rayden and Mallorcan writer Laura Gost.

International writer Aria Aber, whose novel Good Girl received a 2025 Women’s Prize for Fiction nomination, is also scheduled to appear.

British writers including Anna Hope and Ben Brooks will also form part of the programme.

New prize for young writers

One of the biggest additions for 2026 is the new FLEM-Magaluf Novel Prize, aimed at emerging Spanish-language writers under the age of 35.

The prize is worth €10,000, with IB3 reporting that 170 manuscripts were submitted for the inaugural award.

FLEM is also launching a new writers’ residency, with places available for authors writing in Catalan and English.

The additions reflect the festival’s ambition not only to showcase established names but also to create opportunities for emerging talent.

More than books

Literature remains at the heart of FLEM, but visitors won’t spend four days simply sitting through author talks.

The programme also includes live podcasts, concerts, poetry, art installations and Secret Rooms, alongside activities designed to encourage visitors to explore Magaluf itself.

Previous editions have featured literary walks, cultural tours and activities connected to the local area, reinforcing the festival’s aim of showing visitors a different side of the resort.

The festival’s opening will feature a musical performance by Maria Hein, according to Calvià Town Hall.

When is FLEM 2026?

FLEM 2026 runs from Thursday, October 1 until Sunday, October 4, at INNSiDE Wave Calvià in Magaluf.

The event is organised by independent bookshop Rata Corner and INNSiDE by Meliá, with support from Calvià Town Hall and cultural institutions.

Access is expected to be free with prior registration, with registrations opening in September.
