Mallorca’s surf scene makes waves in Peguera with film, music and ocean action

Four days of surf culture in Mallorca

The festival’s programme combines international surf cinema with activities designed to get people away from the screen and into the outdoors.

Visitors can expect surf films, talks with professional surfers, workshops, a Surf Market, food trucks, DJs, exhibitions, live art and a skatepark, creating a festival atmosphere across Peguera.

The event is also firmly focused on protecting the marine environment, with around 90 per cent of the Balearic Islands’ marine NGOs taking part.

One of the key environmental activities will be the Paddle Out, a collective action involving Balearic marine organisations and linked to the Pacte Blau Balear.

International films take centre stage

Film remains at the heart of WIPEOUT, with a selection of international documentaries and short films exploring surfing, ocean culture and some of the issues affecting communities connected to the sea.

Among the highlights is Women & the Wind, an award-winning documentary following three women on a journey across the North Atlantic. One of its directors, Laerke Heilman, will attend the festival as a special guest.

Other films on the programme include Makai, which explores identity, diversity and racism within the surfing world, as well as GUTS, from Italian documentary filmmaker Patrizia Bruno.

There is also a strong environmental focus, with films including Through Clouds & Water and From Dust to Dream, which looks at ways of producing surfboards with a lower environmental impact.

Water, Get Enemy?, directed by Daniel Obasi, turns the spotlight on a new generation of surfers in Takwa Bay, Lagos.

Music, markets and food by the sea

WIPEOUT is not just about sitting down to watch films.

On Friday and Saturday, Plaza Torà will become a lively festival hub, with live music, DJs, food trucks and the Surf Market running alongside film screenings and visual displays.

Friday’s programme includes performances from Los Coronas and Mena G, while Saturday will feature Mallorca band L.A., followed by Los Pucheros Atómicos.

The combination of outdoor cinema, music and food is expected to give the festival a distinctly relaxed seaside feel, with many of the activities taking place in the heart of Peguera.

A festival for all ages

Saturday will bring a particularly packed programme, beginning at 11am with an eco-action on Peguera beach.

Participants can join a beach clean-up with Protemar before heading out on paddle boards as part of an initiative highlighting the importance of safe spaces for non-motorised navigation.

There will also be a roller workshop, environmental education activities, photography, musical performances and a Mediterranean sound experience.

The festival programme includes activities aimed at different ages and interests, meaning visitors do not need to be dedicated surfers to get involved.

WIPEOUT’s fifth edition will therefore offer a mixture of cinema, culture, entertainment and environmental awareness, while putting Peguera firmly in the spotlight as a meeting point for Mallorca’s growing surf and ocean community.
