Igualeja fire causes emergency alert and confinement order as flames spread towards Sierra de las Nieves

A wildfire near Igualeja in Malaga province has led to a major emergency response, with residents told to stay indoors as strong winds complicate efforts to control the flames.

Igualeja, approximately halfway between Marbella and Ronda, has had Andalucia’s regional government raise the Plan Infoca wildfire emergency to operational level 1 during the early hours of Sunday, September 27. Confinement measures were also ordered for Igualeja, according to regional emergency authorities.

Firefighters were first called shortly before 11pm on Saturday, September 26, after flames were spotted in the Mirador de Igualeja area, close to the A-397 road between San Pedro de Alcantara and Ronda.

Crews have been working through the night to prevent the fire from spreading further. Strong winds are making conditions difficult for firefighters, with the Consorcio Provincial de Bomberos de Malaga confirming that the weather is a major problem.

Initial reports suggested the fire was moving away from Igualeja towards the Valle del Genal. However, the latest reports say the situation became more concerning overnight, with flames visible from Ronda.

No official confirmation has yet been issued of damage to homes, injuries or the total area burnt. The fire is also close to the Sierra de las Nieves National Park, although there is no confirmation that the protected area has been affected.

Firefighters deployed overnight

Plan Infoca has sent 120 forest firefighters, a BRICA reinforcement brigade, four operations technicians, an extinction technician, a deputy director of the emergency coordination centre, two logistics technicians and two environmental agents.

Five fire engines, a meteorological unit, a mobile operations centre and a medical unit are also involved in the response. Guardia Civil officers and firefighters from the provincial service are providing additional support.

Residents should follow official instructions and avoid travelling towards the fire area. Anyone in immediate danger should call 112.

Recent wildfire in Benahavis

The Igualeja fire comes only weeks after a wildfire in Benahavis, which forced around 50 people to leave the Montemayor urbanisation as a precaution. That fire, which began on September 13, was declared stabilised on September 16 and controlled on September 17. A 78-year-old man later died in hospital after suffering serious burns, while three other people were injured.

Updates on the Igualeja fire are expected from Plan Infoca and Andalucia’s emergency authorities as firefighting teams continue working this morning.
