Once more, Mazarron has been recognised at national level for its ongoing commitment to tackling gender-based violence, marking the third consecutive year the municipality has received this honour. The award showcases the town’s continued efforts in prevention, awareness and community engagement for gender-based violence victims, placing Mazarron among 35 municipalities across Spain acknowledged for their work in this area.
Mazarron’s third year in a row of national recognition
The recognition forms part of the “Contra el Maltrato, Tolerancia Cero” (Zero Tolerance For Abuse) initiative, led by the Fundación Mutua Madrileña, in collaboration with Antena 3 Noticias. This national programme shines a spotlight on local administrations that are actively working to combat violence against women, while also encouraging wider social involvement in building a safer and more equal society. Mazarron’s inclusion for the third year in a row is a great feat, and highlights the impact of its local policies.
Community efforts and focus on prevention of violence
Much of the work recognised has been led by the municipality’s Department of Equality, which has focused particularly on prevention and education initiatives. These efforts help to raise awareness among younger generations, promote respectful relationships, and challenge harmful behaviours from an early age.
The award was received in Madrid by the Councillor for Equality, Miguel Ángel Peña, alongside members of the department’s technical team. The ceremony took place at Atresmedia Studios, bringing together representatives from across Spain who are involved in similar projects.
Education and awareness initiatives to eradicate gender-based violence
This honour also reflects a broader commitment, at a municipal level, to address gender-based violence through education, prevention and community participation. It also reinforces the importance of local governments in driving change and supporting national efforts to eradicate violence against women.
With three consecutive years of recognition, Mazarron continues to establish itself as a leading example in the fight against gender-based violence, and the Costa Calida municipality continues to demonstrate how focused local action can contribute to meaningful progress on a national scale.
