Gata de Gorgos has celebrated its local businesses, traditional crafts and food with three days of festivities as the 21st Fira Gata al Carrer brought the Costa Blanca town’s streets to life.

Held from Friday, October 9, to Sunday, October 11, the annual fair transformed the town into a showcase of local commerce, artisan skills, regional flavours and live entertainment, giving residents and visitors the chance to discover what makes the community special.

The event formed part of a busy weekend across the Marina Alta, where towns marked the Valencian Community’s October 9 regional day with cultural activities, music and traditional celebrations. In Gata de Gorgos, the focus was on bringing people together while supporting the independent shops, producers and craftspeople that help define the town.

Music and local traditions fill the streets

The festivities began on Friday afternoon, with the official opening at 7pm accompanied by a performance from the Colla de Xirimiters i Tabaleters El Montgó, a traditional music group.

Visitors could also enjoy a performance by La Rondalla de Gata, live music from Grup Deler and an open karaoke session, creating a lively atmosphere as the fair got underway.

Food and drink were another major attraction, with tastings featuring artisan cheeses, cured meats, honey and other local products. One of the more unusual offerings was an ice cream tasting paired with wine, while Ca Polaca presented a traditional white botifarra sausage with pork cheeks and wine from Bodegas Claudio.

Saturday brought another full programme, including the 12th chess championship, a live beehive demonstration and a demonstration of artisan ice cream-making, allowing visitors to see traditional skills and local production up close.

Keeping Gata’s craft heritage alive

Traditional craftsmanship remained at the heart of the celebrations, with demonstrations and gatherings highlighting skills passed down through generations.

One of the key activities was the meeting dedicated to llata, the traditional weaving of plant fibres, particularly palm, which has long been associated with Gata de Gorgos. The technique is used to make items such as baskets, bags and hats, and the gathering offered enthusiasts an opportunity to exchange knowledge and help keep the craft alive.

The fair also featured demonstrations of handmade chair weaving, macramé, embroidery, lace-making and other textile techniques. Visitors could discover traditional handmade bedspreads from Gata, while local artisans showcased their work throughout the event.

These activities gave the fair a purpose beyond entertainment, celebrating the skills and traditions that have helped shape the town’s identity.

A feast of local flavours

Food lovers had plenty of reasons to explore the stalls, with traditional dishes and artisan produce available throughout the weekend.

Among the highlights were bunyols, a traditional fried treat, oven-baked rice dishes and putxero paella, alongside Spanish and international tapas.

Cheese and charcuterie tastings offered another opportunity to sample regional produce, while visitors could learn more about beekeeping and honey through demonstrations and tastings of raw artisan honey.

Live music accompanied the food stalls, with performances from local musical groups and roaming bands helping to create a festive atmosphere. Vinyl DJ sessions also brought a different musical flavour to the programme.

Family entertainment brings everyone together

The organisers ensured there was plenty to keep younger visitors occupied, with a children’s play area open throughout the weekend and activities designed to encourage families to join in.

Children could take part in a maraca-making workshop, while interactive music activities, including karaoke and a collaborative mural, offered opportunities to get creative.

A traditional horse-and-cart ride added another nostalgic touch, giving visitors a different way to experience the town during the festivities.

With local shops taking their products out onto the streets, the event also provided an important opportunity for businesses to connect with customers and showcase the range of goods available in Gata de Gorgos.

Celebrating the community spirit

The 21st edition of Fira Gata al Carrer once again brought together commerce, gastronomy, music and cultural heritage in a celebration centred on the town itself.

Its programme combined familiar traditions with hands-on activities and entertainment, creating an event where visitors could browse independent businesses, taste local specialities and learn more about the crafts that have helped shape Gata’s reputation.

The fair also formed part of a wider weekend of celebrations across the Marina Alta, with municipalities marking October 9 through concerts, traditional performances and family activities.

For Gata de Gorgos, the three-day gathering offered a chance to celebrate its identity, support local businesses and share its traditions with visitors from across the region.
