Residents across the Axarquia are preparing to walk, donate and show their support for people affected by breast cancer this Sunday, October 25, as two major community events take place in Nerja and Torrox.
Families, friends, survivors and supporters are expected to join the walks, organised with local branches of the Spanish Association Against Cancer (AECC), helping to raise awareness, support research and encourage early diagnosis.
Nerja concludes a week of breast cancer awareness
A full programme of activities has been taking place in Nerja since October 19, culminating in Sunday’s solidarity march through the town. The initiative has been organised by the local health department in partnership with the local AECC branch.
Sunday’s event begins at 12 noon with the reading of an official manifesto, followed by a solidarity walk through the town. Participants will then continue to the Jose Bobadilla Álvarez Sports Pavilion, where a community paella is planned.
Earlier activities have included an information stand at the local health centre and an awareness day at the Arches of the Balcon de Europa featuring zumba, a theatre performance by older residents and the creation of a pink ribbon using balloons. Town Hall buildings have also been illuminated in pink as a gesture of support for those living with breast cancer.
Torrox hopes to attract more than 1,500 participants
A strong turnout is also expected in Torrox, where organisers hope to surpass the previous record of 1,500 participants in the town’s annual cancer awareness walk. The event is open to all ages and is non-competitive.
Registration opens at 10.30am in Plaza Almedina, with dance performances scheduled from 11.30am by choreographers Lidia Salvatierra and Nadia Gonzalez. The walk starts at 12.30pm, following a route through Calle Calzada, Calle Baja, Calle Pontil and the ring road before returning to the starting point. Several cancer patients are then expected to read an institutional manifesto.
Participation costs €8, with the registration fee including a commemorative T-shirt, water, fruit and a serving of migas, a traditional Andalucian dish made from breadcrumbs, served with a local salad. Children’s activities organised by the Pandora group are also planned. Advance registration is available through the local AECC office in Avenida de Competa and at the Maria Victoria Olalla community hall in El Morche.
Continuing the message of World Breast Cancer Day
Although World Breast Cancer Day is observed annually on October 19, awareness campaigns and fundraising activities continue throughout the month. Events in Nerja and Torrox are part of that wider effort to keep prevention, research and patient support in the public eye.
Proceeds from both events will support the AECC’s patient care services, support networks for families, and ongoing cancer research projects.
With streets expected to fill with pink t-shirts this Sunday, organisers hope the strong turnout will ensure no one in the community feels isolated after a diagnosis.
