The Costa Blanca town of Calpe came alive in October as the residents and visitors of this idyllic town celebrated yet another exciting edition of its Moors and Christians festival, a standout event in the autumn calendar in the Marina Alta and a grand spectacle for attendees. The event, organised by the local Associació de Moros i Cristians Santíssim Crist de la Suor, included a full programme of events that saw the town light up with colour, activity, music, costumes, and fireworks.

Traditional festivities bring Calpe to life

The traditional and cultural festival kicked off with the unveiling of the Festival Book, a presentation by the town crier, and a musical concert by the talented Calp-Ifach Musical Union in the House of Culture Auditorium. Over the next few days, the town streets were filled with music and parades in a traditional festival atmosphere, including vibrant costumes and performances by the talented local marching bands.

Religious ceremonies honour local traditions

One of the standout moments of the event was the raising of the banners in the Plaza Mayor, followed by a beautiful offering of candles to the Santíssim Crist de la Suor at the Parish Church of Our Lady of the Snows, showcasing the deeply traditional and religious roots of this famed celebration.

Colourful parades and spectacular performances entertain crowds

Another major highlight of this year’s edition of the Moors and Christians in Calpe was the mascletá, a daytime pyrotechnic show focused on intense sound, rhythm, and ground vibration rather than colourful lights. They took place both during the day and in the evenings, and were preceded by solemn masses, processions, and performances by local talents.

Over the weekend, the festival also hosted an adorable Children’s Parade, in which the little ones marched down Avenida Gabriel Miró. The weekend also saw dance performances, including the Dance of the Christian Captaincy at the Filà Marins Corsaris, and the Christian and Moorish entrance parade, where performers made their debut with grand costumes and over-the-top showmanship.

Battle reenactment takes over the Calpe beach

A large part of the celebrations of the Moors and Christians festival, not only in Calpe but across the entire Costa Blanca, are the battle reenactments. The one in Calpe took place on Playa Arenal-Bol and made for a thrilling performance, as well as a spectacle for newcomers to the festival.

With vibrant colours, talented local performers and actors, catchy rhythms, and a festival atmosphere that spread to every corner of Calpe, the 2026 edition of the Moors and Christians festival was a grand success, with organisers, residents, and visitors to the town already looking forward to the next edition and exciting upcoming festivals on the Costa Blanca.
