A horse trotted into a five-star Belgian hotel for lunch and one guest knew exactly how to send it home

Lunch at a luxury Belgian hotel took a strange four-legged turn when a horse strolled through the front doors and headed straight for the restaurant.

Diners at Bistrôt Le Ciel, part of the five-star La Butte aux Bois hotel in Lanaken, Limburg, were enjoying their meals at around 1.40pm on Saturday, October 24, when the brown horse wandered in from the street. Security footage showed it passing through reception, along a corridor and into the bistro with the confidence of someone who had booked a table weeks in advance.

No reservation, no problem

Six tables were occupied when the visitor arrived. Guests made space, staff stayed calm and the horse picked its way between them, apparently unbothered by the unusual setting.

Hotel general manager Jessy Brepoels called it a particularly memorable “walk-in”. After 27 years at the hotel, she had seen stray birds find their way indoors, but never an animal quite this large.

“It came in through our main entrance, by reception,” Brepoels told VRT. “It walked in a straight line to our bistro, where lunch was in full swing. It was immediately extra entertainment for our guests.”

A brief interest in wine

Concierge David Geurts told Dutch-Belgian newspaper De Limburger that the horse first tried the hotel’s wellness area, only to find that door shut. A glass door at the bistro, however, opened automatically — and in it went.

Once inside, it wandered between tables and gave a wine glass a gentle sniff. Thankfully, the glass stayed upright. One diner celebrating a birthday reportedly quipped to her partner: “You didn’t have to do that, darling,” as the horse passed by. Geurts suspected it was a dressage horse, an animal likely used to being around people.

A dog treat saves the day

After roughly ten minutes, a guest produced a dog treat and held it near the horse’s muzzle. The tactic worked beautifully: the horse followed the diner back through the bistro and reception, then left the building exactly as it had arrived.

Staff from a riding centre about 175 metres away had turned up by then and guided the horse back to stables belonging to the well-known Zangersheide stud farm.

Other than a few hoofprints on the wooden floor, the hotel escaped without damage, which is impressive, considering the artworks dotted around the building.

Geurts described the whole thing as “a fun diversion for the guests”, and noted that the hotel had picked up a little free publicity in the process.
