Warm chestnuts, local treats and music in the village square will bring neighbours and visitors together when Alcaucin celebrates its chestnut festival on Saturday, November 7. Activities begin at midday, with food, dancing and a community celebration continuing into the early hours.
Alcaucin’s Fiesta de la Castaña is the perfect excuse to explore a part of the Axarquia region. This year’s programme leaves room for everything from browsing market stalls to joining friends for an evening of live entertainment.
Alcaucin chestnut festival starts with a market and music
Celebrations open at 12pm with a Zumba masterclass to get your blood pumping for the day. Market stalls also open at midday, selling typical Andalucian products and giving visitors something to browse before the afternoon performances.
Evelyn Rios brings live music to the main square at 1pm and continues entertaining visitors during the lunchtime food tasting. Scheduled for 2pm, the meal features plato alpujarreño, a traditional Alpujarra-style dish, available while supplies last. Anyone hoping to try it should plan around that serving time rather than leave lunch until later.
Roasted chestnuts and traditional treats from 6pm
Infinity Show performs at 5pm, when chestnut roasting also gets under way. Distribution follows at 6pm, making the early evening a good time to gather with friends for the food at the heart of the celebration.
Visitors can also sample mantecados, traditional crumbly Spanish biscuits, batatas (sweet potatoes), and anis, an aniseed-flavoured alcoholic drink, all to the sounds of DJ Noslen.
A community tribute before an evening of dancing
Jose Antonio Ponce Fernandez, director of local broadcaster Axarquia TV, delivers the festival’s ceremonial address at 8pm. Organisers will then present the Castaña de Honor, meaning “Chestnut of Honour”, to a local resident.
Infinity Show returns at 8.30pm for an evening performance, with DJ Sebas playing during the band’s breaks. Entertainment is scheduled to continue into the early hours, giving those who want to stay plenty of time on the dance floor.
Plan your visit around your favourite part
Early arrivals can enjoy the market and lunchtime entertainment, while visitors coming for chestnuts should note the 6pm distribution time.
Whether the plan is lunch with neighbours or a longer evening of music, Alcaucin’s programme puts shared food and local people at the centre of the day. An inviting way to enjoy autumn and spend time together.
