UK Blue Badge holders can now park in Italy. A major win for disabled travellers

Disabled drivers from the UK can finally use their Blue Badge in Italy, ending years of uncertainty for holidaymakers, second-home owners and expats who rely on accessible parking. Italy has formally recognised the UK permit, giving holders access to reserved parking spaces and, in some areas, restricted traffic zones.

For anyone who has avoided Italian city breaks because of worries over fines, clamping or inaccessible parking, this change could make travel feel far less stressful.

What has changed in Italy

Italy’s Minister for Disabilities, Alessandra Locatelli, confirmed that the UK Blue Badge is now recognised across the country. Holders can use it for disabled parking and for access to ZTL areas where local rules allow it.

A ZTL, or Zona a Traffico Limitato, is a restricted traffic zone commonly found in Italian historic centres. These areas often have camera enforcement and strict time limits, so drivers should still check the specific local regulations before entering.

Minister Locatelli described the agreement as an important step towards mobility and independence for disabled people. She added that Italy would continue working to protect their rights, including when they travel.

What UK visitors should do

Carry the physical Blue Badge whenever driving in Italy and display it clearly on the dashboard or windscreen. Traffic officers must be able to inspect it easily, so a badge left in a bag or glovebox may not be enough.

Check parking rules for each destination before travelling. Recognition of the badge does not automatically guarantee entry to every ZTL, because access rules can differ from one local area to another.

Visitors should also make sure their badge remains valid for the whole trip. An expired, damaged or incorrectly displayed badge could leave travellers exposed to local penalties.

This update brings Italy into line with several other European destinations that already accept UK Blue Badges. France, Spain, Belgium, Croatia, Cyprus, Germany and Slovakia are among the countries where UK badge holders can use their permit, subject to local conditions.

A reciprocal arrangement

Italian disabled parking permits are also recognised in the UK under the reciprocal arrangement. Drivers from either country can benefit when travelling between the two nations, provided they follow local parking rules.

Travellers planning a trip should still read official guidance before setting off. Parking concessions and restrictions vary across Europe, so a little preparation is essential.

Disabled motorists planning an Italian holiday can now travel with greater confidence, knowing their UK Blue Badge has formal recognition. Local councils may still apply their own rules in ZTL zones, so checking ahead is wise.
