A sunny Sunday stroll with friends could help support someone facing diabetes. La Cala de Mijas will host its eighth annual diabetes awareness walk on Sunday, November 8, bringing residents together for a morning of fundraising, walking and wonderful community spirit.
La Cala Lions Diabetic Support Group is organising the five-kilometre walkathon event, gathering in Plaza del Torreon from 10am before heading along the beautiful coastal boardwalk. This year’s message is “early detection”, encouraging people to learn more about a condition that can go unnoticed.
La Cala diabetes walk welcomes all ages
Children, pets and people with reduced mobility are all welcome to join the accessible stroll. A fun group warm-up will get everyone moving and in high spirits before the walk begins.
Residents who cannot walk the distance can still contribute by sponsoring somebody else. Organisers’ invitation puts it warmly: “We’ll happily walk on your behalf!”
Businesses, clubs and groups of friends are encouraged to take part as teams. Sponsorship money will support diabetes awareness and local projects, giving participants a practical way to help their community. Last year’s event attracted more than 200 walkers wearing the association’s distinctive blue T-shirts.
Not only walking, enjoy a market, music and free glucose tests
Plaza del Torreon will also host a market, music and entertainment, giving supporters who are not walking a reason to join the day. Volunteers will also offer free glucose tests and information about diabetes.
Families can enjoy fun children’s activities, while market stalls will sell delicious food, crafts and Christmas gift ideas. Visitors can browse, enjoy the entertainment and spend time with neighbours while supporting the appeal.
November’s walk takes place shortly before World Diabetes Day on November 14, connecting the local fundraiser with a wider awareness campaign.
How to join or sponsor a walker
Participation is free, although donations are very much appreciated. Advance registration is not required, but organisers encourage anyone interested to contact the Lions charity shop in La Cala or telephone 607 879 450. Sponsorship forms are available from the shop or through the same number.
Free commemorative T-shirts are also up for grabs for the first 200 arrivals, so get your shoes on and head down early.
