Local students in San Pedro del Pinatar have made a leap towards a more healthy ecosystem, participating in a day of picking up litter and helping the local ecological landscape. Students from year 1 to 4 of secondary school at IES Manuel Tárraga Escribano took part in the Libera Project in the Salinas y Arenales Regional Park of San Pedro del Pinatar, a day dedicated to collecting, identifying, and analysing rubbish left in the town’s natural spaces.
Students take part in beach clean-up initiative
The workshop, in which 50 students participated, formed part of the ‘1m² Against Trashure’ project, which has brought together more than 10,000 volunteers in the Region of Murcia since its launch in 2017.
The day took place on Monday, November 2, on the beach of Torre Derribada, in the Salinas y Arenales de San Pedro del Pinatar Regional Park. There, the students collected various pieces of rubbish found on the beach, identifying, analysing, and cataloguing the types of waste found. This data will not only help the students learn about litter prevention, but also helps officials to learn what types of materials most commonly end up in natural spaces. It will also raise awareness about the consequences of leaving litter in delicate ecosystems.
Thousands of volunteers join Murcia’s anti-litter campaign
The Libera Project in particular has collaborated with the Region of Murcia since 2021, carrying out dozens of activities with a registered 2,214 participants. It has made fundamental steps in developing environmental education, participation, and citizen-based science activities.
Since 2017, the ‘1m² Against Litter’ campaign in the Region of Murcia has established 612 collection points and an astounding 10,759 volunteers.
Upcoming November activities: The public helps clean the region’s beautiful natural spaces
The programme will continue with two activities open to the public in November. On Saturday, November 7, ‘1m² for the Mar Menor’ will take place on El Carmoli beach in Bahia Bella, with the collection, identification, and analysis of rubbish along an approximately 500-metre stretch.
Following that, on Sunday, November 8, the Sierra de la Pila Regional Park will host the workshop ‘Orientation and Waste Collection Challenge’, aimed at the public and in particular families, with a route of about 1.5 kilometres in which maps and compasses will be used to locate points and collect waste in a workshop that mixes fun with environmental consciousness.
Protecting the Region of Murcia’s iconic landmarks
Prevention actions are also being carried out in many of the Region of Murcia’s iconic and beautiful natural spaces, including the Cabo de Palos Reserve, the Calblanque, Sierra Espuña and Salinas y Arenales de San Pedro del Pinatar regional parks and the El Valle Wildlife Recovery Centre.
