MAYORS of municipalities in the Balearic Islands with fewer than 6,000 inhabitants do not get money to pay their own salary.
Their salary is paid directly by the Balearic Regional Government, which is five months late, Spanish newspaper Diario de Mallorca reported.
Usually they would receive their salary for the year in June. Thirty mayors in total are affected by this delay. This is the first year that the payment of their salaries has been delayed for so long, according to some of the mayors.
Some say that they have been told by the Balearic Government that the money ‘is about to be transferred’ and others that they will be paid sometime between December and ‘as soon as possible’. This new salary system was created in 2006.
