SAN JUAN night is celebrated in towns around the Costa Almeria on Saturday June 23. Some town halls hold public fiestas and serve traditional grilled sardines.
In Garrucha there will be bouncy castles for children on the beach in front of Califa from 6pm, followed by a foam party at 8pm. Sardines will be served at 9pm on the medical centre end of the beach opposite the El Eden Restaurant. Then at 10pm on Playa Posito beach (near the five-a-side football pitch) there will be live music and dancing.
Many families and groups of friends prefer to organise their own parties or beach picnics on San Juan. It is the only night of the year that barbecues can legally be lit on Almeria’s beaches. In Garrucha and other towns a huge bonfire is lit on the beach at midnight. People sometimes burn a wooden fishing boat, too.
