Town Hall appeals to citizens to prevent fires

MIJAS Town Hall has appealed to citizens to put a stop to people vandalizing rubbish containers, after two more organic waste containers went up in flames.

The fire was apparently intentional and started in El Zoco Shopping Mall’s trash area, in Mijas Costa. One of the containers was completely destroyed, and the other was severely damaged. Both of them were amongst of the 1,780 new containers that had been distributed all over town in the recent weeks.

Carmen Marquez, the councillor of Solid Waste pointed out that “we all have to cooperate to eradicate these acts of vandalism”. She also pleaded citizens to “notify the Police if you see strange behaviour near rubbish containers”.

Local Police are still investigating to find a suspect responsible for a spate of container fires, especially in Las Lagunas.

In addition, the councillor has asked citizens to “take care of and use the containers correctly”, because “they have cost the people of Mijas a lot of money and belong to all of us”. Marquez also recommended both private homes and restaurants to be very careful throwing away incandescent materials that may also start these fires.
