AN EIGHTEENTH century water channel has been discovered during work being carried out on streets in the Santana neighbourhood of Mijas village. The channel, found where Calle Lasta meets Plaza de los Siete Caños, would have served in the past to carry water to the upper part of the neighbourhood, Public Streets councillor Juan Carlos Gonzalez explained. The plans for the roadworks will now be adapted to allow a transparent cover to be placed over part of the channel, allowing it to be seen from above, but causing a slight delay in the renovation work, the councillor explained. As the area undergoing work is designated as a historical site, the Junta de Andalucia regional government insists that an archaeologist is present during works, and more finds are possible in surrounding streets, Gonzalez said.
