THE port authorities are accepting proposals from interested parties to set up hotels in unused space inside Malaga and Marbella’s lighthouses. An announcement in the Official State Bulletin has given the date of a month from today, May 14, for proposals to be handed in by parties interested in taking over space not needed to run the lighthouses and to establish hotel facilities there. The Puertos de Estado State Port Authorities expressed an interest in boosting use of Spanish lighthouses at the beginning of 2014, and although it was recently announced that many areas had decided not to join the project, Malaga and Marbella are to be included. The idea of the Faros de España (Lighthouses of Spain) project is to put the emblematic buildings to good use and allow tourists to visit and even stay inside the important buildings. In the case of the Marbella lighthouse, a local company has already put in an application to renovate and run the space available at the Faro de Marbella. The Malaga Port Authorities will, however, reserve the right to use whatever space is necessary to ensure the correct operation of the lighthouses for their original purpose.
