THE initiative to turn Mallorca into an anti-bullfighting region is going strong, say campaigners. On Wednesday, July 1, Mancor de la Vall declared itself a bullfight-free area, becoming the 18th municipality to do so, in support of the campaign Mallorca Without Blood (Mallorca Sense Sang), launched by animal rights associations AnimaNaturalis and CAS Internacional.Town mayor, Guillen Villalonga, of the MES per Mancor party, was the one to put the motion forward, which has been approved during a plenary session with four positive votes, even though the PP conservative party abstained from voting. The campaign has already gathered 130,000 signatures requesting a ban on bullfighting in Mallorca and, in their words, “the end of torture.”Coordinator of the campaign, Guillermo Amengual, delivered a distinction to the town’s mayor during the plenary session to thank the local government for supporting the initiative.
