THE 54th edition of Pollença’s Festival will put the spotlight on Mexican culture. The event was designed to combine music, literature, cinema and gastronomy and will take place between July 18 and August 22.“In Europe we have a very limited, preconceived idea of what Mexico looks like, and they think that all Spanish people are bullfighters,” said artistic director of the event, Joan Valent. The Pollença Festival Orquestra, under the direction of Angel Gil-Ordoñez, will perform on August 13 presenting a show titled Viva Mexico, a montage of Mexican music combined with the projection of movie Redes (The Wave, 1993).Literary figures such as Juan Villoro, Guillermo Zapata and Mariana Salinas will also take part in the event. Two major Spanish artists are to perform for the occasion: flamenco singer Estrella Morente and German singer and actress Ute Lemper. The Pollença festival was created in 1962 as the brainchild of English violinist Philip Newman, and has established itself as a renowned event for music enthusiasts.Events are to take place at the Cloister of Santo Domingo Convent. The complete programme can be found at www.festivalpollenca.com.
